In 2007, durable polyurethane saved a 104-year old bridge. Amazingly, polyurethane saved the bridge by making a sandwich! The design team working to repair the historic Dawson Bridge in Edmonton, Alberta recommended using the Sandwich Plate System (SPS) from Intelligent Engineering Ltd. to serve as a lightweight solution to rehabilitate the bridge.
Built in 1912, the bridge was due for a new deck. Engineers feared that traditional decking materials would be too heavy, but polyurethane offered a solution. Not only did SPS present a lighter alternative, but use of SPS would enable the bridge to be refurbished in...Architecture

This Convention is one of the largest assemblies of architects and design professionals in the world. The expo spreads out to over 170,000 sq. ft. of booths, galleries, and lounges. Bayer’s lightweight polyurethane composite panels hold the promise to help Malaysia offset an affordable housing crisis.
The panels help enable sturdy, energy efficient homes to be built quickly. The material may be able to reduce the cost of construction by 40% due to reduced labor. The home components can be pre-fabricated, resulting in one unit being completed in five days.
The houses will have the added benefit of greater energy efficiency, with polyurethane providing a durable barrier to air and moisture leakage. This efficiency will reduce cost of ownership while improving the environmental impacts of the homes.
