There’s a new mode of transportation that might make you feel like you’re floating above the sidewalks. Singapore-based entrepreneur, Oliver Risse, has created a three-wheeled scooter that is made of 80% composites and plastics instead of metal.

CPI announces 2015 Polyurethane Innovation Award Finalists

After outside judges reviewed all submissions, the Center for the Polyurethanes Industry is proud to announce the three finalists for the 2015 Polyurethane Innovation Award! The award is presented annually at CPI’s Polyurethane Technical Conference, which is the premier event for industry expertise, professional networking and regulatory issues.

Payerne, Switzerland: Today,Solar Impulse 2, the second single-seater solar aircraft of Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg designed to take up the challenge of the first round-the-world solar flight, without any fuel in 2015, carried out its first flight out of the Payerne aerodrome in Switzerland. There will be several other test flights taking place in the coming months in order for this experimental machine to attain certification. They will be followed by training flights of Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg later in the season still from Payerne airfield. The attempt to make the first round-the-world solar-powered flight is scheduled to start in March 2015 from Gulf area. Solar Impulse will fly, in order, over the Arabian Sea, India, Burma, China, the Pacific Ocean, the United States, the Atlantic Ocean and Southern Europe or North Africa before closing the loop by returning to the departure point. Landings will be made every few days to change pilots and organize public events for governments, schools and universities.

Durable Polyurethane Encourages You to Ride High in the Skies!

National Ride the Wind Day is August 23rd and commemorates the anniversary of the first human-powered flight that occurred back in 1977.  What would human flight be without the use of polyurethane?  Polyurethane is found in various wind riders including hot air balloons.  The balloon, or “envelope,” is crafted of woven fabric, typically nylon, and coated in polyurethane.  The polyurethane coating is combined with silicone to protect the fabric from sun damage.  Shout out to durable polyurethane for helping the adventure seekers ride on!

Surfing Legend Inducted Into Surfers’ Hall of Fame

Gordon “Grubby” Clark was inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame after a long career in developing polyurethane foam molds for surfboards. Clark began working for Hobie Surfboards after spending two years in the Army, where he worked as a laminator to help pay off the rest of his college education. He began to look for a replacement material for balsa wood, which was more expensive and difficult to find. In the mid-1950’s, Clark began to develop polyurethane foam molds.
