Polyurethane Revs It Up

Polyurethane is transforming the elite ranks of the automotive industry. To improve the production and performance of Aston Martin’s high-end vehicles, Aston Martin has partnered with Dow Automotive Systems (DAS). With this technical partnership, more DAS polyurethane products will be used in Aston Martin production models and racing cars.

DAS has supplied Aston Martin with polyurethane structural adhesives. Polyurethane adhesives provide extra strong bondability in joining materials. They implemented this polyurethane technology on the new Aston Martin DB11, producing an automotive part with long-term durability, improved crash performance and other benefits.

Anyone Order A Polyurethane Sandwich?

In 2007, durable polyurethane saved a 104-year old bridge. Amazingly, polyurethane saved the bridge by making a sandwich! The design team working to repair the historic Dawson Bridge in Edmonton, Alberta recommended using the Sandwich Plate System (SPS) from Intelligent Engineering Ltd. to serve as a lightweight solution to rehabilitate the bridge.

Built in 1912, the bridge was due for a new deck. Engineers feared that traditional decking materials would be too heavy, but polyurethane offered a solution. Not only did SPS present a lighter alternative, but use of SPS would enable the bridge to be refurbished in...

Buckle Up the Kids, and Polyurethane, for a Trip to the Beach

A family vacation to the beach is incomplete without polyurethane. Here’s how polyurethane can improve your trip to the beach this summer:

  • Sandless Beach Mat
  • You put down a beach towel or mat to avoid getting sandy. Thanks to specially woven polyurethane, a sandless beach mat will save you from being covered in sand. If any sand falls on the mat, it simply filters through. That’s pretty incredible!

  • Skim boards
  • Originally made from plywood, skim boards are now lightweight and more durable because of polyurethane foam cores. Weighing in at around 3 lbs. —compared to 20 lbs....

Let Polyurethane Paint You a Picture

Need to cool down, but bored of spending the entire day inside your home? Enjoy an outing to a museum! There are more than 35,000 museums waiting to be explored in the United States. Not only can you find great tours, artwork, and history but also chemistry’s favorite versatile material: polyurethane!

For example, the George Washington University Museum in Washington, D.C., uses polyurethane in mounting textiles. Textiles such as quilts, carpets, and tapestries are usually mounted with simple polyurethane fasteners. However, certain larger items require something a little stronger.  The polyurethane varnish also prevents any possible textile...

    But What’s a Prepreg?

Have you, or perhaps your kids, ever “accidentally” made a hole in the wall? Maybe someone threw a football in the house or a corner of some furniture knocked a dent into the wall during a move. To spot-treat this problem, you probably went to your local hardware store and picked up a home repair kit that included a mesh reinforcing fabric. Little-known fact: this reinforcing fabric is called a prepreg.

Prepegs have become popular over the last few years because of their advantageous handling properties. However, there have been some downsides to prepreg technology when it comes to using...

    Polyurethane Catches the Breeze

The winds of change are blowing through the wind turbines in Asia! Covestro, a supplier of polymers, has introduced yet another impactful polyurethane product. Their new design of rotor blades for wind turbines will soon contribute significantly to energy efficiency in Asia.

What makes these blades so incredible? Polyurethane, of course! Covestro teamed up with Chongqing Polycomp International (CPIC) to fuse polyurethane resin with CPIC’s glass fiber mats. This combination of materials went through a vacuum pressure infusion system to create the rotor blade.

Rotor blades in the past had been produced with an epoxy resin. However,...

Polyurethane is Proud to Be American

According to the American Chemistry Council, “The [polyurethanes] industry directly employs more than 235,200 Americans… [and] each job in the polyurethanes industry yields four more jobs indirectly.” However, you don’t have to work in the polyurethanes industry to see the benefits of polyurethane!

Entrepreneurs Mike Robb and Tom Osborne of Cincinnati, Ohio, made polyurethane work for them. In 2014 they came up with the concept of the “beer blizzard.” While on a weekend camping trip, Mike and Tom realized the indented bottom of all beer cans had the same dome shape. As beer enthusiasts who hate hot beer,...
